“"Well, I'm going to be helping Professor Audley with things for her class, and going to conferences, handling artifacts and such." She slowly nodded. "I'm really excited. Just something to do." She brushed her fingers over her pants. 'If you need any help with anything, to get credit hours, please let me know. I'm trying to find an excuse to not go home for the holiday break later. Maybe it'll impress my father too." She laughed. "As long as that's not weird or anything."”

Eric looked surprised. “Professor Audley? Isn’t she a little…” Lost for words, he made a face like he’d eaten something rancid. With a little laugh, he rubbed the back of his neck. “Okay, that was rude, I haven’t even really met her. She kinda keeps to herself, you know?”

He looked helplessly around the room like he was searching for an answer to the second thing, her request. “I, ah… well, there’s not a whole lot that needs doing, I don’t have a lot here. And I’m not sure, really, how long I’ll be staying. But if I find anything? You’re my girl.”

“Ariel laughed a little. "I promise I didn't poison them." When he asked her about classes, she slowly nodded. "I was offered an internship with a teacher, and I took it. Thought I should keep myself busy."”

Eric tossed the other half of cookie in his mouth and brushed his hands off. “That’s great!” On so many levels, he thought. “Do you like it? What are you doing?”

“She laughed a little, moving her hands away from her eyes and shook her head. "That's okay. I ate so many trying to get it right. I told you, cookies aren't really my specialty." She rubbed her arm and leaned her head back against the chair and watched him for a moment. "I hope they're good."”

He nodded emphatically and chewed. “They’re great, well done,” he said, gesturing with the uneaten half and setting the plate down. His arms casually crossed as he leaned against the desk. “If I keel over later, though, I’ll know to blame you.”

Suddenly he realized there wasn’t much to say other than the mundane. Not really where he wanted to go, but what else could he do… Better that than nothing at all. “So how’re classes? Anything good? Besides mine, of course. I mean, really, nothing’s more interesting than cephalopods, right?”

“She sighed and rubbed her arm. "I suppose coming in for a few minutes won't hurt anyone," she murmured. She followed closely behind him and sat down in one of the chairs he offered to her. She sat down quietly and played with the ends of her hair, nervously. "I'm sorry," she managed. "About the other day. I'm, I usually don't act that way." She rubbed her palms on the knee of her jeans and avoided his blue eyes.”

He took a cookie for himself and then offered the plate for her as well. “Dah wauuruh bou eh. Fwu waa wan?” he said with a childish smile, the treat hanging halfway out of his mouth. His attempt to lighten the mood. He did, however, glance back at the door to make sure it still stood open on its hinges.

“"Oh..uh, no. That's alright." She said standing straight and then offered the plate of cookies to him. "I was just leaving a peace offering. I'm really sorry." She blushed, thinking to herself about how much she needed to just shut up. "I mean, I suppose I can come in if you really want me to."”

He took the cookies from her with a tentative but friendly smile. “Thank you. It’s up to you, if you wanna… come in…” he said quietly, his tone warm. “I don’t want to make you feel…” He searched for a euphemism for uncomfortable. If he said it, he thought, it would instantly become that way. “My door is always open.”

“Ariel knocked on Professor Devore's door, holding a small plate of cookies, as she had promised before to him. This time, she was going to apologize for her rude behavior and then let it go. She had come to terms that she had put him in a very awkward position. Ariel contemplated on just leaving the cookies at the door and leaving, and just as she was bending over, putting the plate on the floor, the door opened. "Oh, uh hello.." She murmured. "S-Sorry to bother you."”

To say that Eric was shocked to see her would have been an understatement. After a moment of surprised silence, he finally spoke: “Hi… Hi. Ah…” He glanced at his empty office and back to Ariel. “Come in…?” He wasn’t sure if it was a request or a question. He’d thought about her a lot and still wasn’t sure of anything really other than he really hadn’t liked the way things turned out. He’d reacted before thinking and he’d really messed things up.
